The year got off to a reasonably good start with the 3 overwintering Shore Larks at John Muir Country Park, Lothian, continuing to show well and on the 4th attempt I finally managed to get them when it wasn't raining.
The flock of 100+ Twite that were also on the saltmarsh were not so cooperative, and were always bit jumpy through constantly being flushed by dog-walkers. It did, however, give me a bit of practice at flight shots.
A Black Redstart that spent a few days on the rocks below the Seabird Centre at North Berwick was quite confiding as it warmed itself in the first rays of the morning sun.
I took a trip up to Aviemore mid-month to have another try at photographing winter Ptarmigans. Unfortunately, the cloud level was below 3000ft and despite the bird being less than 10metres away, it was difficult to get sharp photos through the thick fog.
